Cell(f)
Statement
Do you listen to your dreams? In Cell(f), a character awakens, haunted by the lingering sensation that everything (life, existence, the self) is deeply interconnected. This unsettling awareness propels her on a journey to decipher the meaning of her dream and, in turn, uncover the nature of her own being.
Interwoven with quotes and recordings of Charles Darwin (voiced by Roger Surridge), Lynn Margulis, and Karen Barad, Cell(f) bridges art and science, drawing on the insights of elders who have grappled with the same fundamental questions. What may appear as abstract imagery is, in fact, the hidden world revealed through a microscope.
The piece features magnified footage of lichen from Brooklyn’s trees, algae thriving in the extreme heat of a supervolcano hot spring in New Mexico, delicate soil crusts from the arid landscapes of Ghost Ranch, and menstrual blood. These minute, living networks echo the film’s central theme: connection at every scale, from the cellular to the cosmic.
